From February 2017, we will be studying the text, “How to Understand the Mind” by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso which explains in detail the nature, function and power of the mind, its different parts and how to gain control over our mind through practical application of this wisdom both in meditation and our daily lives.

The evening will begin with some traditional preparatory practices and a guided meditation.  This will be followed by a practical teaching based on a section from How to Understand the Mind and a brief discussion in pairs about the ideas raised. After the class, there will be an opportunity to stay behind and ask any questions that you may have about the programme and for those who wish, to enrol.  This is not a drop-in class and involves enrolling (which includes all the benefits of KMC London Temple membership), and making a commitment to try to come each week.

Benefits of Foundation Programme

There are many benefits to joining the Foundation Programme namely:

  • Increased personal insight, wisdom and experience of Dharma (Buddha’s teachings)
  • Studying and meditating more effectively following a specially-designed programme and qualified meditation teacher
  • An opportunity to discuss and ask questions
  • Help, support and friendship from like-minded people
  • Gain the ability to integrate Buddha’s instructions into busy modern life.

Foundation Programme has many benefits (as mentioned above) and is not a drop-in class.  Enrolment is required and we ask that everyone who enrols:

  • has a sincere personal commitment to try to attend each class,
  • will commit to at least 3 months after having one or two taster sessions.

FP students enrollment offers all the benefits of being a KMC London Temple Member.

These personal commitments combined with the special structure of the class (see below) enable us to take the most from our efforts to improve the quality of our mind and realise our full potential.

The programme consists of a dynamic combination of teachings, meditation and discussion, all of which enable us to go deeper into the layers of meaning within each book that we study.  All of this helps us to make real progress along our spiritual path.

Each class consists of preliminary prayers, guided meditation and reading from the book with commentary and discussion.

‘How to Understand the Mind’ by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

This book offers us a deep insight into our mind, and shows how an understanding of its nature and functions can be used practically in everyday experience to improve our lives.

The first part is a practical guide to developing and maintaining a light, positive mind – showing how to recognise and abandon states of mind that harm us, and to replace them with peaceful and beneficial ones.

The second part describes different types of mind in detail, revealing the depth and profundity of the Buddhist understanding of the mind. It concludes with a detailed explanation of meditation, showing how by controlling and transforming our mind we can attain a lasting state of joy, independent of external conditions.
