Class Information

Time: Tuesdays 7:30 – 9pm

Location: The Guildford Institute, Ward Street, Guildford, Surrey GU1 4LH

Cost: £10 per class (no need to book) or

£40 for 5-week series | £32 for a 4-week series | £25 for a 3-week series (book online below)

What to expect:

These classes are open to everyone. They start with a welcome and guided breathing meditation to settle the mind, this usually lasts around 20 minutes.

Then there is an inspiring talk exploring practical methods derived from Buddha’s teachings to improve our daily happiness, solve our internal problems and move towards lasting peace of mind. The teacings are very practical in nature, drawing from everyday examples and showing how we can remain mindful of the insights we gain during the course of our daily life.

The class concludes with a second meditation, based on the ideas raised and some take away advice on how to implement the teaching into our day.

Classes run following a four-week series but can also be attended on a drop-in basis at any time as each class is also self-contained. See below for class details and block booking.

Overcoming Stress & Frustration | September

Stress, frustration and anger are common experiences in modern life. These painful states of mind can easily arise when we encounter challenging situations and difficult people. If anger is not recognized early on it becomes a poison that destroys our happiness and can interfere with our relationships.

This revealing series of classes will introduce several methods for recognizing, reducing and finally removing this destructive habit from our mind, helping us to experience the peace and freedom that we all long for.

Each session will include a combination of teachings and meditation with an opportunity to ask questions at the end.

Tuesday 4 September – What is Our Problem?
This class will explore the real nature of our problems and address the underlying causes of stress and frustration.

Tuesday 11 September – Why We Get Stressed
Discover the stages by which stress and frustration develop, learning to use this understanding to gradually gain control over our thoughts.

Tuesday 18 September – Learning to Let Go
Discover how to drop our anger when it arises by remaining mindful of the faults of anger and preventing the buildup of bad feelings.

Tuesday 25 September – Dealing with Difficult People
Practical advice on how to control our mind when faced with people we find challenging.

Tuesday 2 October – Finding Peace through Wisdom
The final class of this series will explore how we can use the wisdom teachings of Buddha to find peace and enjoy a life free from stress, anger and frustration.

Understand Your Mind: The key to peace and happiness | October

Everybody wants to be happy and free from problems. Normally we try to achieve this by using external methods, but no matter how materially wealthy, powerful, or highly respected we become we shall never find freedom from problems. Happiness and suffering are states of mind, therefore if we are to find the happiness we seek we must learn to understand our mind.

This series will challenge our ordinary way of relating to our life and provide a meaningful opportunity to explore Buddha’s teachings on the nature and function of the mind and how it has the power to create our world of experiences. We will also look at how we can practically apply a Buddhist understanding of human psychology so that we can eradicate negative emotions and come to experience deep inner peace throughout our life.

Tuesday 16 October – What is the mind?

Although we often say “my mind, my mind”, when asked what exactly is the mind, most people are unable to give a clear answer. This class will explain clearly the nature, function and power of the mind according to Buddha’s teachings.

Tuesday 23 October – How the mind works

This class will explore how we develop both positive and negative minds independence upon the mental factor discrimination and how we can use this knowledge to transform our experiences.

Tuesday 30 October – Dealing with Painful Feelings

Discover how feelings develop and how we can free ourselves of negative emotions through adopting special ways of thinking.

The Buddhist Way of Loving Kindness | November

Explore how to cultivate an authentic experience of loving kindness through meditation. By opening our heart to others, we can solve many of our daily problems, improve our relationships with others and maintain a happy peaceful mind all the time.

At present, our experience of real love is very limited and is often conditional- thus, most of our relationships with others, also serve as a source of much pain, anxiety and frustration. However, through training systematically in these timeless methods we can make all our encounters with others more satisfying and meaningful.

Tuesday 6 – Developing Pure Unconditional Love

This class will explore Buddha’s teachings on the difference between love and attachment and on this basis, how we can learn to increase our love by gradually reducing the power of our attachment in our relationships.

Tuesday 13 –  Cultivating Gratitude

We can get so stuck focusing on the negative that we can forget to appreciate all the benefit we receive from others. By maintaining an awareness of the kindness of others in our life we can keep a positive, grateful mind that will make us more warm and well disposed towards others and protect us from unhappy thoughts.

Tuesday 20 – Changing our View of Others

This class will explore how we can distinguish between a person and their delusions and use this wisdom to let go of blame and criticism.

Tuesday  27– Developing Humility

If we feel superior to others we cannot develop a deep experience of love. This class will explore how by training in humility we can cultivate an attitude of respect towards others that is the very essence of the Buddhist way of life.

Compassion in Action: The practice of taking & giving | December

“When we purify our mind through the practices of taking and giving, every spiritual realization will grow easily in our mind.”

This series will explore powerful meditations on taking and giving derived from the Buddhist mind training tradition through which we can heal our mind and powerfully enhance our love, compassion and wisdom.

There are four main benefits to the practices of taking and giving which are mentioned in Buddhist scriptures, they are powerful methods to:

  • Purify the potentialities of non-virtuous actions that cause us to experience various difficulties and problems
  • To accumulate a great collection of merit or good fortune
  • To ripen our potentiality to benefit all living beings
  • To purify our mind.

Tuesday 4 – Taking By means of Compassion   

A powerful meditation on compassion using the power of imagination and concentration that can be used to help others and solve our own inner problems.

Tuesday 11 – Giving by means of Love   

A special training in love that enables us to bring our future ability to give happiness to others into our present spiritual practice.

Tuesday 18– Mounting taking and giving upon the breath 

In this class we will learn how to unite the two previous trainings with breathing meditation which has many profound benefits.

Ljubica (LJ) is an inspiring teacher of Kadampa Buddhism having studied and practised for many years in the UK as well as the US and Canada. She teaches the weekly class in Guildford and various weekend events. LJ brings to her teachings a wealth of both understanding and practical application of Buddhist practices within her busy life as a mother and engineer.
