This FREE public class held in our world peace temple is open to everyone and provides an opportunity to experience the peace of meditation and learn practical tools to solve our daily problems through application of Buddha’s timeless advice. The teachings will be based on the inspiring book “The New Eights Steps to Happiness” written by the contemporary meditation master and founder of KMC London, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. The class will take place in conjunction with Prayers for World Peace – a short, simple and beautiful chanted practice that reminds us how to create the causes for peace for our self and others through recitation of verses taken from ancient Buddhist poetry.
What does the class entail? Each class consists of a breathing meditation to settle the mind. Then there is a teaching based on a topic from the book The New Eight Steps to Happiness. Then we collectively recite the verses from Prayers for World Peace which include a silent period for further meditation. People are welcome to stay after the class for refreshments and to discuss the ideas raised or ask questions to our friendly Buddhist community.
Is it religious? The classes are based on Buddha’s teachings which principally reveal how to maintain a happy and peaceful mind all the time and then to share this experience with others. Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso says “Everybody religious or non-religious is looking for happiness all the time. They can fulfil their aim through practising these instructions.” The temple draws people from all walks of life from experienced Buddhist practitioners to those just wishing to learn more about meditation. Everybody is welcome regardless of background or beliefs.
Do I have to join in the prayers? No. The main part of the class will be the teaching and guided meditation. The prayers help prepare the best conditions in our mind for these and last around 10-15 minutes. There is no requirement to participate, you can simply listen and soak up the peaceful energy of the temple.
